My typographic piece responds to the normalisation of single use products convenience culture has created. As consumers we are all responsible for contributing to a ripple effect of social and environmental issues with each purchase beyond the proper disposal of products. With the phrase ‘you are part of the solution’ it was my goal to create an empowering reminder that we are all part of the solution - that the average person really can make a difference by taking action and adopting some new routines into their lifestyle.

Interview with Leona Fietz

Postfossil: Hello! What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Leona Fietz and I live and work in Melbourne, Australia.

Postfossil: How do you work?

For my calligraphic scripts I use pointed brush pens and also ink and brushes. For my illustrated words I start by drawing with pencil and paper and then either trace in illustrator with the pen tool or photoshop with a brush.

Postfossil: What inspires you?

Content wise I gather words and phrases from all sorts of places - lyrics, lines from movies, things friends say. Style wise I have a lot of typographic books I reference and consume a lot of different design and art media.  Mostly I try to look at history when it comes to the structure of letterforms.

Postfossil: What are you up to right now?

I am currently working on a few group show pieces. Spending long days in the studio focusing on one piece at a time, slowing down my process to take it the next level.

Postfossil: How did you start the design process of the flag?

I started by researching the goals, writing down any keywords I thought were important or powerful in my sketchbook.  From there I drew lots of thumbnail sketches of a my favorite ideas to test layouts. After a little sketching I put pen to tracing paper and started trying out the phrase in different styles. Lastly I put the many versions on the wall to critique, pick out the best letterforms in each and try to replicate again in one final piece before bringing into photoshop for editing.

Postfossil: What do you want to express with your design of the flag?

I wanted to communicate a sense of hope and instill power into anyone reading it that there is a lot you can do. But to create change, we all take ownership of our lifestyle choices.

Postfossil: What is your wish for the future of the planet?

I hope for sustainability and equal rights for all!
